Depression
Depression is more than sadness. It is a feeling heaviness that makes even the simplest of tasks feel impossible and a sense of hoplessness that can make you feel like you'll never be happy again. Psychological treatment can help you feel lighter and help you reconnect to lifes joys, bringing about peace and wellbeing.
Anxiety and Stress
Stress and anxiety are significant impediments to wellbeing. While some aspects of stress can be managed through practical life changes, others are not so easily resolved. For those things, therapy can be a helpful resource in learning how to experience challenges differently, using principles of acceptance and self compassion to reduce internal distress.

Grief and Loss

Loss can cause unimaginable suffering and pain, and it can feel as though you will never feel normal again. We assure you, this is not the case. While the loss often can't be undone, the way we experience it will shift over time. Therapy is a helpful tool in the grieving process, as it provides opportunity to reflect upon and honour what is lost, and helps in preparing to move forward. Therapy can expand your personal understanding of values and beliefs, and can be instrumental in reconciling the difficulties of loss.

Trauma

Trauma results when we are faced with physical or emotional experiences that are threatening to our sense of safety in the world. In some cases, those threats represent life or death situations, such as those experienced by soldiers or first responders. In other instances, they reflect times in our life when we've felt helpless or victimized. There are many ways we experience trauma. Physiological symptoms include: anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, disorientation. But trauma can also manifest  subtly, impacting our daily lives and our relationships. Without treatment, trauma can be consuming and the effects can intensify over time. Transcend therapists are highly trained in treating trauma, using empirically supported treatments, EMDR and Somatic Processing.

Addictions

There are many ways that we can become addicted. In some situations, substances that we ingest can create a physiological dependency, causing intense cravings that if unfulfilled can lead to significant withdrawal effects. Other addictions form as the result of a neurological reward system, where our brain releases 'happy' chemicals that we come to rely on. This is what makes things like shopping, gambling, and pornography addictive. It is not uncommon for people to rely on these things (or substances) to cope with emotional distress. Therapy can help in resolving the underlying vulnerabilities that led to the addiction, as well as in learning new coping strategies for managing lifes challenges.

Chronic Pain

Our minds and bodies are deeply connected. On a neurological level, receptors in the brain are responsible for processing physical sensation, meaning that pain is actually a mental perception. Not only can our emotional experience impact our perception of pain, it can also lead to neurological changes that cause increased sensitivity to it. In essence, distress and frustration caused by discomfort can actually worsen the pain. It is also possible for other psychological and emotional stressors to unconsciously show up in the body. In some cases, working through emotional or relational issues may be sufficient to ameliorate the problem. Therapy is also helpful in developing awareness of the body’s reaction to emotional experiences, which allows for conscious relaxation of the muscles.
